Transforming Tone into Behavior
Corporate officers recognize their essential responsibilities to “set the tone” for ethical behavior and compliance. Typically, that tone is established through a strong Code of Ethics, consistent corporate messaging, a commitment by senior officers to “walk the talk,” and enterprise-wide training for employees who form the base of the organizational pyramid.
Despite all that, many companies have discovered that the tone at the top is not changing behavior at the base. The problem is frequently found in the middle. It is middle management that must translate the tone at the top into practical programs that support ethical behavior throughout the organization. They must communicate the company’s commitment, develop strategies that support an ethical culture, and implement practical programs to for training, communication and compliance.
