Why Your Company Needs a Social Media Policy

This paper looks at the reputational risks posed by irresponsible online behavior, which seems to be getting much attention from the online community and mainstream media.

In this paper we outline key elements of existing social media policies, as they address targeted issues created by the business sector in which they operate -- and the regulatory requirements they're facing. For example, companies in the insurance, financial and healthcare industries have been slow to embrace social media policies, often because of compliance concerns.

This paper also recommends that the policy reflect the company’s culture. An organization that bases its reputation on a culture of teamwork and mutual trust may be hard-pressed to explain a policy that bans all use of social media by employees.
